AHA’s Girl Up Club’s purpose is to educate and empower female students at AHA. They have discussed topics over the years from breast cancer awareness to how women are represented in certain male-dominated fields in society. Each year, Girl Up has a certain theme that will be discussed; this year’s topic is sports ruling of Title lX which ensured that women should get the same opportunities to play sports just like men do ever since the title was made official 51 years ago. The Girl Up club has been going strong because of the members that take part in it. Sienna Dhariwal ’25, explains the club’s significance at AHA, “Girl Up Club is a crucial implement in the AHA community. AHA’s Girl Up has created an amazing and passionate environment which has grown beyond comparison. I feel as though it is necessary that the club provides a safe environment where all members are comfortable.” She also touches on how this club could truly make an impact for the female community at AHA moving forward, “It is crucial that we as female students are offered the same opportunity as others. It is important that every woman anywhere, but specifically at AHA feel like they are represented well and advocate for themselves. In the future of Girl Up at AHA, I hope that the membership grows as well as people’s confidence in speaking up for themselves.”
Besides taking part in a school environment, Girl Up is collaborating with other Girl Up clubs from schools across Minnesota to host the Girl Up Gala. This gala pursues the goal to advance girls’ skills, rights and opportunities to be powerful leaders. Every year a school’s Girl Up club hosts this gala and AHA has the opportunity to be able to host this event on November 8th, 2024. Girl Up is an international organization that allows the club to connect with other members all over Minnesota and beyond. Girl Up Club is one of the many clubs here at AHA, not only making an impact, but empowering future female leaders to make a positive change of equality for AHA, and in society.
