“A Complete Unknown,” a biopic of Bob Dylan played by Timothée Chalamet, debuted on December 25th, 2024. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Chalamet had five years to prepare for his role as a young Bob Dylan, partly due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Hollywood strikes. In the beginning, Chalamet did not know a lot about Dylan, however, he devoted himself to learning everything about him. Alongside this, Chalamet took guitar and vocal lessons while working with dialect, movement, and harmonic coaches. He surrounded his whole life around Dylan in order to truly replicate his life on screen.
Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, Minnesota, where he attended Hibbing High School. According to Minnesota Daily, Dylan was enrolled at the University of Minnesota before leaving for New York to pursue his musical career. Therefore, Chalamet found it fitting to visit UMN to see Dylan’s college experience, which surprised many Minnesotans. AHA senior, Andrea Elsen, was fortunate enough to see Chalamet during his visit. In an interview with Elsen, she explained how she saw a post on Instagram that Chalamet was visiting UMN and decided to drive downtown with her mom to see for herself. Elsen and her mom drove by a theater near UMN that had a sign reading : “We welcome Timothee Chalamet.” She waited outside of the theater alongside a big crowd for Chalamet to make an appearance, and two hours later, he did. He unfortunately did not come near the barricade she was standing beside, however, she did get the opportunity to see him in person.
According to Deadline, “A Complete Unknown” has received eight Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Leading Actor.
