For this year’s spring musical, Starlight Productions brings Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to the stage. Starring Landon Stenger ‘24 as Joseph, Josephine Rutt ‘23 as the Narrator, and Jack Blaylock ‘24 as Pharaoh/Potiphar, this musical is not one to miss. The cast is working hard on stage blocking, memorizing lines, vocals, and choreography, while the crew works tirelessly on sound management, set design and construction, costume design, and lighting. Rutt says, “the music is super fun. It’s a mix of every genre and contains an Elvis-like aspect and rock n’ roll.”
This musical follows the life of Joseph, based on the biblical Book of Genesis. The music is written by none other than Andrew Lloyd Weber, one of the most famous Broadway composers of all time. He is well-known for musicals like The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Cats, and School of Rock. However, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was Weber’s first musical performed on Broadway. Without this debut, his other musicals may not have received the recognition they currently have today.
Act I revolves around Joseph’s betrayal from his brothers, his journey through slavery in the house of Potiphar, followed by a reflection of Joseph’s prophetic dreams. Act II picks up with Joseph in jail, stuck interpreting the dreams of fellow prisoners and eventually, Pharaoh himself.
This will be the last show for all seniors, and Rutt reflects on her experience in Starlight Productions, saying, “it was very hard to get involved in theater during covid, but now that we’re all together again it’s been the best thing ever and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to have been a leader in the theater department.” Show support for the months of preparation and rehearsal by buying tickets and bringing friends and family to see this year’s musical.
