Staying Sustainable During The Holidays

With the holiday season coming around the corner, it is important to consider the environmental impact that holiday traditions have on the Earth. A common practice during Christmas parties is the use of plastic, paper utensils, and plates. The idea of using disposable dishware seems harmless, yet the impact it has on the planet is greater than it seems. Many of these items end up in landfills, and, although paper plates are able to decompose, it takes much longer than if the plates were put in compost. The solution to this problem, though, is simple! Reusable plates and forks work as a great alternative (they also will look nicer on your Christmas-themed dining table!).

Another common tradition for Christmas and Thanksgiving is disposable party decorations, which also pile up in landfills during the holidays. It is easy to find compostable party streamers, biodegradable balloons, and thrift items such as candle holders and glass decor. Lastly, large amounts of wrapping paper are thrown away during the holidays, especially on Christmas Day. Easy alternatives to avoid this dilemma can be reusing paper gift bags or purchasing compostable wrapping paper!

Happy holidays!
